The Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children is a local charity, which offers practical, emotional and financial support to children and young people up to and including the age of 24, who are living with cancer, and their families.
Three children are diagnosed with cancer every week in Northern Ireland, leaving three more families to cope with a level of devastation that is almost impossible for most of us to comprehend.
For these young people and their families life will change dramatically. From the point of diagnosis, throughout their treatment, remission and in some cases bereavement, families have access to practical and emotional support. We are very proud that we currently offer 12 services to support children, teenagers and young people and their families across Northern Ireland. Here are just some of the ways we have helped in the last year:
• 18 Children within the Fermanagh Region are currently using the services provided by the NICFC.
• 2 Youth Workers help families in the Fermanagh region. This includes conducting regular one-to-one visits (this comprises diagnosed clients living with cancer and siblings); holding family days for families; and more recently the Young Shoulders Programme has been rolled out in the region.
• 96 families received a Home Heating Grant to help keep their home at a warm temperature whilst their child is immuno-suppressed following treatment.
• 151 Road Miles Grants were given to families to help them with the costs of travelling to hospital for treatment.
• 127 families benefited from respite at Shimna Valley, the NICFC’s home situated in the tranquillity of the Mourne Mountains.
• 42 residentials were held in Narnia, our unique log cabin, helping young people regain confidence, develop coping strategies & make lasting friendships.
• 11 Travel for Treatment grants were given to families who had to travel outside Northern Ireland for treatment with their child.
This support is a vital lifeline to many families.
