Amateur Radio - Lough Erne ARC

Lough Erne Amateur Radio Club's annual rally on Sunday 1 April in the big Arena at SHARE was a huge success. Attendance included the President of RSGB the UK body, Vice Presiident of the Republic's body and the President of the Old Timers Association among 300 from North, South and Britain. Ireland's best and most famous amateur radio rally is in Fermanagh, and has been every April for the past 30 years.
Exhibitors included both the UK’s Radio Society of Great Britain and the Republic’s Irish Radio Transmitters Society, founded 1932 and celebrating its 80th year. The Radio Amateurs Old Timers Association stand recruited more members. Rally attendance is not confined to radio amateurs. Trade stands included Enniskillen’s Modellers Corner, a hobby similar to aspects of amateur radio.
Most Lough Erne ARC members are licensed with a call sign issued by Ofcom to operate an amateur radio station. Their hobby is making local, national and international contacts with other radio amateurs, by voice and morse code, and technical activities, construction of equipment, aerials, etc – hence the modelling hobby similarities.
In 2009, the Club set up the Fermanagh mobile repeater station GB3CP. We also have a mobile amateur transmitting station that can be set up at community events - for example each May at Marble Arch Caves.
The Club HQ is in SHARE. the scene of its successes and recent growth in 2009-2011. These merited the Northern Ireland Club of the Year Award, twice, and the UK Club of the Year runner-up Award. LEARC members also got cups from the Irish Radio Transmitters Society.
LEARC runs courses and examinations for amateur radio licenses from Ofcom, with 43 successes in 2010/11 - 30 Foundation, 9 Intermediate and 4 Full license, one of whom, Tommy Mi0RVH we elected Chairman at the September 2011 AGM.
Founded 1979, Fermanagh's award winning amateur radio club is well known across these islands. We welcome more licensed members and more interested in getting an amateur radio license.
In February 2012 we welcomed 8 members, some re-joining, some new as SWLs Short Wave Listeners ahead of the next Foundation course.
