Managing the challange course




“Managing the challenge” of living with a long term condition What is Self Management Self management entails both a positive mental attitude and positive actions that help you get on with living your life the way you want to. It involves knowing when to recognize the limitations that your condition has put in your life and meeting the challenge of living your life to the full in spite of them. What is Self Care? Self care is the things you do on a daily basis to function in your day such as medication, exercise, rest, diet. They are the practical everyday actions you take to allow you to live with your condition. Managing your condition is looking at the big picture of your life and choices and decisions that you make to allow you to live as full a life as possible. Self managing your condition is about empowering you to make better healthy choices for you and giving you more freedom to look at what you can do in your life in spite of your condition and taking more responsibility for it. Is Self Management for me? Attitude and emotional well being are affected by any long term condition and it is normal to feel frustrated, angry, isolated and depressed trying to deal with a health condition. This course will teach you new skills in challenging and dealing with negative and difficult emotions. Self Managing your Condition Learning to manage your condition will significantly improve your quality of life. The “Managing the Challenge” of living with a long term condition course will teach you skills to manage all aspects of life with a long term condition including: • Pain Management • Relaxation • Exercise • Diet • Relationships with Health Professionals • Building confidence What is the “Managing the Challenge” of living with a long term condition course? It is a course that will help you manage your condition more effectively. It will enable you to deal with pain, fatigue and stress by giving you helpful techniques such as exercise, relaxation, action planning, problem solving and by sharing experiences with others. The “Managing the Challenge” of living with a long term condition is a course that was developed in Stanford University in the USA by people with long term conditions for people with long term conditions. It is delivered by the Western Health & Social Care Trust under license from Stanford University through the Long Term Conditions Alliance Northern Ireland. What does the course involve? The course is delivered to a group of 12-18 people over 6 weeks in 6 consecutive 2 hour sessions. It is delivered by 2 trainers that work and or care for people with long term conditions and that have received training to deliver the course. In just 6 weekly 2 hour sessions you will understand more about your condition and learn new skills in how to self manage it through various methods such as; group work, working in pairs and listening to talks. Who is the course for? The course is for anyone over the age of 18 with any long term health condition that is impacting on the quality of their life and would like to learn new skills in how to self manage their condition. How will this course help me? The “Managing the Challenge” of living with a long term condition is designed to help you to learn new ways to manage your condition, to reduce your pain and to deal with other problems caused by your condition. It will help you take positive actions and make decisions in the overall management of your condition. What makes this course special? The course is delivered by people who an understanding of the impact of a long term condition on a person through personal experience or from working with people with long term health conditions. They understand the difficulties you face. The emphasis is on learning what you can do for yourself and how to make the most of the information you get from your health professionals. It is a supportive group where there are specific skills and actions that you can take to help you feel more in control of your life. What is the cost? There is no cost for the training it is free to anyone that has a long term health condition and is interested in learning new skills in self managing. • Health and Safety Card – The Construction Skills Register Health and Safety Card is compulsory for anyone working in the construction industry. All vital Health and Safety elements are covered. Health Promoting




The Oak Healthy Living Centre, Roslea, invite parents to take part on an 18 week Health Promoting Homes project. It is open to parents with children four years and under from Roslea, Newtownbutler, Donagh, Brookeborough, Lisnaskea and surrounding areas. The course will be held in the Wildfowl Centre in Lisnaskea on a Tuesday or Thursday morning from 10am-12noon. Creche and transport are provided if required. The course is divided into three modules, each lasting six weeks on personal developement, diet and nutrition, including Cook It! practical cookery course and a physical activity module which includes fitness, gym induction, pilates and first aid. This course is free and gifts, such as beauty voucher, fruit hamper and pedometer are given to participants on completion of each module. Transport can be arranged if required. The Active Families programme is a new 12 week course, one night per week, to get active in a fun way with the whole family. The course is open to 11-16 year olds, who must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent, guardian. The focus is on getting healthier and more physically active in a fun way, which will have great benefits for you and your family. There are incentives included in the course with leisure centre passes, grow your own garden kits and a trip at the end of the programme to Todd's Leap. John Cleary is returning to Dooneen Community Education Centre on Thursday 9th September to teach his guitar class.John takes beginners from 8-9pm and the more advnaced pupils from 9-10pm. John is a registered guitar tutor. New learners welcome.





Killesher Walking Festival




Killesher Walking Festival – ‘From the Mill to the Mountain’ – Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 September 2010. Guided walks from the Larganess Centre in Florencecourt to Cuilcagh and Benaughlin Mountains. Child Protection Awareness Training Workshop




Child Protection Awareness 2day Training Workshop. Taking place on 23rd & 30th September 2010, from 10am - 4.30pm. This workshop deals with raising the awareness of those involved in working with or providing services to children (up to age 18). It is based on the principles of good practice and covers residential and field trips in addition to provision of services and activities.

The course is for anyone over the age of 18 with any long term health condition that is impacting on the quality of their life and would like to learn new skills in how to self manage their condition.
