Derrygannon Craft & Heritage Society was formed in September 2001. A group of people in the community met to discuss the heritage of the area and the the traditional crafts. They discovered that there was only one man 'Pat O'Rourke' left in the area that could make a creel. Pat agreed to take a class. That winter ten people, four women and six men learned the skill of creel making. With the interest that was shown in these classes it was decided to set up a committee. The committee was formed and it was decided to look for funding for a training programme to teach the skills of traditional crafts. This was obtained through Rural Development Council under the EU PeaceII programme. Classes A range of classes were set up each Tuesday and Thursday night. 8.00 - 11.00 Classes ongoing at present are Woodcarving and Creel Making on Tuesday night and Trap restoration on Thursday night.
