08-Nov-11      AMATEUR RADIO COURSES in SHARE
Could you become a modern Marconi?
Lough Erne Amateur Radio Club is running another course and examination in SHARE for a Foundation license from Ofcom that allows low-power communication on amateur radio bands across Europe and beyond.
Amateur radio is an international social and technical hobby with a wide range of activities for all ages, men and women, girls and boys. There is a lot to do in this ancient hobby, from experiments like Marconi’s a century ago to this year’s amateur radio links between Fermanagh and the International Space Station.
Notably, it is a great pastime for those house-bound by physical illness or disability - and their carers. SHARE and the Club are keen to facilitate suitable arrangements.
Ofcom regulates the BBC etc, and also three levels of amateur radio license. Recent courses and examinations run in SHARE by Lough Erne ARC saw 39 successes (and only 1 fail) gaining 26 Foundation, 9 Intermediate and 4 Full licenses - so far.
Enriched by keen newly licensed members, LEARC twice won the Northern Ireland Club of the Year Award. It then represented NI among 14 regions to win the UK-Runner-up Award, marking these successes and other activities here in Fermanagh.
Now, LEARC is again recruiting for a Foundation course, held over two weekends, exam and results on the final Sunday, then licenses from Ofcom later that week.
Please contact ASAP the Secretary and Lead Instructor, Michael Clarke Mi5MTC, Tel 6862-1436, Mob 079-2241-1443, Email sec@learc.eu

30-Jun-11      NI Cancer fund for Children
Every week in Northern Ireland 3 children, teenagers and young adults are diagnosed with cancer. This has an absolutely devastating impact on family life, and for a very long time the family unit will not be the same again. This is why the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children is here at a time when it is most needed.
We support families throughout Northern Ireland by providing practical, emotional, social and financial to support to children and young people up to the age of 24 living with a childhood cancer diagnosis. We are a local charity and every penny raised in Northern Ireland, is spent here helping local families throughout the province.

09-Jun-11      Epilogues
Rural Community Network is offering a training opportunity through a programme called Epilogues. This is a very inclusive, workshop-based, programme which has an ambition to deliver a balanced view of the ‘conflict’ to those taking part. The training programme involves the use of stories (recorded on DVD) from those who were actively engaged in the conflict; RUC, soldiers and those who belonged to paramilitary organisations on all sides and it also makes use of recorded stories from those who have been affected by the conflict either directly themselves or their loved ones. It is regarded as an important course to help people to play an active role in peace building.

08-Mar-11      Charity Commission announcement
The Charity Commission announces new powers for investigation, compliance, enforcement and scrutiny.

Following the recent announcement that the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland (CCNI) has introduced new charity regulation to Northern Ireland, The Fermanagh Trust has organised a free seminar for charities and their members to learn about the implications of this work.

The move allows CCNI to begin its investigatory, compliance, enforcement and regulatory scrutiny of all charities currently registered with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) for tax purposes, and will begin the regulators efforts to increase public trust and confidence in charities. Details, including the names of more than 6000 organizations to which these powers apply, will be published on a new list via the CCNI website. If you lead a charity operating in Northern Ireland and registered with HMRC, then these new powers can apply to your organization.

Alex Attwood, Minister for Social Development said,

“The legislation my Department has made will mean CCNI can begin scrutiny and regulation of a large part of Northern Ireland’s charitable sector. It is a transitional measure to allow the Commission to begin regulation and investigations of charities registered with HMRC.’’

Up until now, the governance and practices of charities have been overseen by central government. As a result there has been no formal registration and only limited provision for investigation and enforcement of the law through the PSNI.

The seminar which is being held at 7.30pm on Tuesday 5th April in Fermanagh House will focus on the new rules and regulations, has been organised by The Fermanagh Trust in partnership with the Charity Commission and the Developing Governance Group. The session will also focus on the importance of good governance within charities. Places are limited, if you would like to attend please register with the Fermanagh Trust on 028 66 320 210 or via info@fermanaghtrust.org

03-Mar-11      Schools join together
Schools join together.

Following the formation of a new committee 12 months ago to organise a truly cross community St. Patrick’s day event in Enniskillen the groups plans are to come to a positive conclusion with the support of schools in Fermanagh.

A year on and the committee has enlisted the help and support of local schools and others, to produce a programme of events that would do justice to the memory of any patron saint.

Preparations are already well under way and this week nine year old Chelsea McCullagh, from Jones Memorial Primary School, won a competition to design a St. Patricks Day flag, especially for the big event.

Schools participating in the Enniskillen Shared Educations Partnership were invited to come up with a design that could replace the use of any contentious flags at this years parade and Chelsea’s vision was the judges’ unanimous choice.

Following the presentation of an Art Set, sponsored by Ken Ramsey, Chelsea explained “ I have designed my St. Patricks flag based around the ‘forget-me-not’ flower. Its name represents the need to remember and respect those around us and the green background represents our lovely country. It is enclosed in a circle which speaks of unit and is separated only by the Yin and Yang which represents wholeness and balance – both are needed in our people and our land.

Around 3000 flags bearing Chelsea’s design will be given out free to spectators at the St. Patricks Day Parade.

The saint himself will arrive by the Share Centre’s Viking long boat. The Vikings weren’t historically on good terms with Christians so this will be something of a miracle in itself!

Final preparations are under way for the big day and the organizers are delighted by the support received from across Fermanagh.

03-Mar-11      Children visit Townhall

Chairman gets grilling from Primary pupils!

Fermanagh District Council Chairman, Councillor Stephen Huggett faced some of the most intriguing and demanding questions in his political career as he sat in the Council Chamber last week. His “fellow councilors” were pupils from two primary schools.

The pupils from Ballinmallard Primary School and St. Columban’s Primary School Belcoo, were taking part in the Shared Education Project run by the Fermanagh Trust.

This year the schools are looking at the theme of government, and their visit to Enniskillen Townhall on Thursday gave them an opportunity to understand how the council works and they took the seats in the Council Chamber normally occupied by the 23 councillors from all over Fermanagh.

Because the classes involved were so big, they had to split the visits over two weeks. Some of the P5s went to the Lakeland Forum one week while the remainder went to the Townhall and vice-versa.

The Townhall Superintendent, Frankie Roofe, was the school’s guide for the day and there was much excitement as the children clambered for the seats in the Council Chamber where they tried on their headsets.

Councillor Huggett took questions from the children and further offered them the opportunity to send in written questions and said he would reply to them.

The schools are now planning a trip to Stormont to learn more about the work of the MLAs.
