Profile

Aisling Centre

The Aisling Centre was established in 1990 as a voluntary organisation to provide a service that focuses on the diverse needs of the community within County Fermanagh and surrounding areas.

Services
The Aisling Centre provides a Counselling Service, a Community Creche, room hire and Conferencing facilities.  Access is considered with a ramp at the back entrance for wheelchair users, a stair lift is available to coucounselling rooms on the first floor and the conference room is installed with a loop system.

Interagency work
The Counselling Service is an active member of the following bodies:
  • Western Trauma Advisory Panel
  • Western Interagency Group - Psychosexual Services
  • Fermanagh Drug & Alcohol Forum
  • Western (SLT) Domestic Violence Interagency Forum
  • DHSSPS (NI) Beravement Strategy Development/Consultation process
The Counselling service has also developed relationships over the years with many voluntary and statutory agencies e.g. the Fermanagh Community Addictions Team.  Some of these services are based in the Aisling Centre building.  Further mental health related groups use the facilities including Aware Defeat Depression who meet there twice per month.

The Counselling Service
The Counselling Service is mainly supported through external funding bodies including the community Relations Council and the Western Health & Social Care Trust.  Voluntary donations are welcome.  Clients are also asked to contribute £5.00 per session.  (Initial appointments are free).

Troubles Related Counselling and Counselling related support
Individual Counselling is provided for victims and survivors of the 'Troubles' whether they've had direct experience or have been affected by others' experience.  This service is availble for people aged from 7years upwards.  A qualified Art Therapist is available for individual Art Therapy or Group Support using art.  An Outreach Worker is also available to provide stress management/personal development programmes to groups.

Non Troubles related Counselling
Individual counselling is available for all adults (i.e. 18years upwards) and children aged 7 to 12 years, regarding various concerns including bereavement, work stress, sexual abuse, family stress, relationship issues (not couple counselling), domestic violence, depression.

Accessing the Counselling Service

  • Referral agent (e.g. GP, Social Worker, CPN) via completion of a Refferal Agent Form.  Referral forms are availble at Reception 9am-5pm or may be posted out on request.  General information about the counselling Service or other facilities is availble via the secretary 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday
Standards of Counselling Service Provision
The Aisling Centre is an organisational member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP).  In addition each Counsellor is required to hold individual or Accredited BACP standards, the Data Protection Act.  The limits to confidentiality regarding the Child Protection Act and the WHSC Protocol for Elder Abuse are highlighted in our 'Client Information Leaflet'  and again at the initial appoinment between Counsellor, Outreach Worker and client(s).  This ensures clarity and transparency while allowing clients to make an informed choice regarding our policies & service provision.

Continued Professional Development (CPD)
All Counsellors' undertake CPD as required by the BACP standards.  Programmes untaken in recent years included the ASIST programme for suicide prevention/intervention and the Western Drug & Alcohol Training Program and the B-TEE Certificate in Cognitive Methods.
